A Syrian regime military defector, named as Ibrahim Eisa al Khabbi, from Mas-hara village in the eastern suburbs of Quneitra governorate, was arrested by regime forces in 2018 despite being amongst those who had previously agreed on a settlement. On March 11, 2021, he was released from Seydnaya Military Prison in Damascus suburbs bearing signs of torture, with his health severely deteriorating. On April 2, 2021, Ibrahim died in a hospital in Quneitra governorate as a result of the torture and lack of health care he endured during his detention in the prison.
SNHR can confirm that at least 131,106 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the regime’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing, given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
SNHR notes that at least 14,315 Syrian citizens have died due to torture in Syrian regime forces’ detention centers.
